I have no idea when the next glossy, phonebook-sized edition of
Portland Monthly will resound in mailboxes and upon dentists' waiting
room coffeetables. When the March issue does appear, it should contain
a short bit on the Oregon Premier Soccer League, arguably the best
amateur football circuit between San Francisco and Seattle, by yers
truly. Look for the picture of heroic Portland Timbers defender Scot
"With One T" Thompson, or some such.

Willamette Week, one of Portland's weekly papers and my
long-time employer, published my feature story on Oregon's medical
marijuana growers today. It was, to say the least, an interesting
projectóthough the story's statement to the effect that I did NOT get
high while writing it is absolutely true. Weirdly enough, this one
inspired quite a few on-line comments. Check it out.

No one loves a conspiratorial, Kremlin-backed assassination like I do.
The Associated Press recently indulged a bit of archival excavation in
the wake of the London polonium hit.

Coffee: the black blood of modern life. For those of us who, like me,
cannot begin a day without a massive tankard of steaming caffeine,
it's a fascinating subject. For others, it's either a wicked
intoxicant, a symptom of globalized injustice, or both. My recent
alt-weekly feature
story on Portland's remarkable gourmet coffee revolution
completely ignored one of these two points of view. Can you guess
which? |
